Simon Buckman: Deer Comedian 04/22/2009
Back in 2002, I thought it would be fun to do a children's book. My idea was about a deer, named Simon Buckman, who goes against the herd to follow his dream of being a professional stand-up comedian. I wrote the story and sent proposals to publishers. It was rejected mainly because the idea isn't...what's the word I'm looking for....oh yeah, "marketable." Commentsdave 08/27/2009 09:30
very clever and i love the drawing in that piece. but i agree... not the most marketable idea.

I like the idea. I did a gag not so long ago with a similar theme... With cows though. It wasn't terribly popular, but to me it was REALLY funny. The audience in the toon is pretty deadpan. I guess I could empathize, that's probably why it's one of my personal favorites. This idea, along with the rest of my ideas, may not make me rich or famous. If that's what I was going for I would have chosen a different path. Don't get me wrong, those things would be great, but my ultimate motivation is the love of doing it. If your strip is funny, go for it! there are a ton of ideas that are not 'marketable' at first glance.
