Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why should I pay for a cartoon if I can easily take it off your site?
A: Would you steal an apple from a display case in front of a grocery store just because it’s easy to steal? I hope not. Purchasing a cartoon is the right thing to do and it makes it possible for me to continue to create more cartoons.
Q: May I share your cartoons on Facebook?
A: You are more than welcome to share my cartoons on your personal page or "just for fun" Facebook page. If possible, please share them directly from my Facebook page, not as new posts. When you share from my page, people can easily see the source of the cartoon.
Q: May I post your cartoon on my Facebook business page?
A: If you'd like to post my cartoons to on your business page (as new posts, not shared from my page), please email me. I charge a small fee for this kind of usage It's similar to the cost of boosting a post. Sharing directly from my page onto your business page is free.
Q: Is it okay if I post your cartoon as a new post on my Facebook business page and then tag your page?
Tagging a page is a nice gesture (it’s better than not giving credit) but hardly anyone visits a page from a tag. I wish they did, but they don't. Please share directly from my page onto your business page. If you manage a Facebook business page, you should read what Facebook posted about copyright (it's short and helpful).
Q: May I post your cartoons on Instagram?
A: You are more than welcome to post my comics on your Instagram page, as long as it's not part of an ad campaign for your business. Please tag @scottmetzgercartoons when you post. If you'd like to use my cartoons in Instagram ads for your business, please email me for licensing information.
Q: I took one of your cartoons and changed it. Is that cool?
Many people think that if a comic (or any piece of art) is online, it's in the "public domain" and legal for them to use it/change it however they want. This isn't true. If you're interested in learning more, here's a good article about copyright.
Q: My company wants to use one of your cartoons. Can we add our logo to it?
A: It depends on how the cartoon is used. In some cases, company logos can be added for an additional fee, as long as my signature remains on the image. Email for more information. Please do not add your company's URL or logo to my comics without permission.
Q: May I use your cartoon for my book (movie, business newsletter, etc.)? I can't offer any compensation, but you'll get great exposure.
A: No, thanks. You can't buy food with exposure. I don't know who came up with the line, "Artists die from exposure," but it's spot-on.
Q: I want to license a bunch of your cartoons. Do you offer bulk discounts?
A: Yes! Email for more information.
